Where and when to study

Studying full-time on campus does not suit everyone. The good news is that you don't have to always be at Monash to study with Monash. You can try part-time study, off-campus study, or Monash Online.

Part-time study

Part-time study allows you to work or pursue other activities while you complete your studies. It can help you to balance academic, work and family life, as you are able to progress through your course at a pace that suits you.

What qualifies as part-time?

A course is generally made up of semester-long units. Most undergraduate units have a value of six credit points. A full-time student usually enrols in four six-point units each semester, which adds up to 24 credit points. From time to time a student's circumstances may change and they choose to do fewer units. In doing so, you should take into consideration whether it will affect your visa status (if applicable), and confirm it does not change your entitlement to any scholarships or benefits.

With faculty approval, you can move from part-time to full-time, or vice versa.

There's only one restriction: all courses have a maximum period of time over which you can complete them. You should always check in the handbook.

International students

If you are an international student on a student visa, you must complete your course within the duration of your Confirmation of Enrolment (COE). Usually, this will mean you have to study full-time. International students not on a student visa (on a business long-stay or spouse visa, for example) can generally reduce their study load more easily. Your faculty will be able to advise on the best course of action.

Off-campus learning

Off-campus learning offers a range of study modes. It's perfect for students who value flexibility, but also want to interact directly with expert academics and like-minded students.

Some courses are only available in off-campus mode, and are designed for professional development within the workplace as you study. Other courses give you the option of transferring between off-campus and on-campus study as your needs change. All of these courses are generally available to international students.
